    author: John Byrne | 09/01/2013 @ 5:36 pm

The 2013 Tournament of Champions golf event at Kapalua was postponed for several days due to high winds, and while fears rose of a total wash out was a possibility, the event’s organizers managed to extend the tourney by a day enabling a champion to be anointed.

Tuesday is only option as winds cause Sunday stall

    author: John Byrne | 06/01/2013 @ 9:23 pm

Without 54-holes to decide a champion, the PGA Tour’s season-opening Tournament of Champions will show a blank for 2013 on its sterling trophy. This is a possibility, but the Tour is doing all it can to figure out a way to avert such an outcome, and if it means a little less coverage for SONY on . . . → Read More: Tuesday is only option as winds cause Sunday stall

Wind shakes up an already jittery TOC at Kapalua

    author: John Byrne | 05/01/2013 @ 11:45 pm

Ever since the media officials from the PGA Tour denied the Maui Golf Review the ability to shoot the event from inside the ropes two years ago, I have instead spent the week with family in New York city, following it from afar.

The trip has become, for me, an interesting barometer of how far our isle . . . → Read More: Wind shakes up an already jittery TOC at Kapalua

PGA Classic raises money, supports local charities and kids.

    author: John Byrne | 15/05/2011 @ 1:49 am

The Aloha Section held its annual PGA Classic—its principal annual fundraiser—at Kapolei Golf Course, on Oahu, April 29, 2011. Da Game Show creator John Byrne was there to photograph the action as a small front moved in and a wee mist formed. Nary a player was deterred as the festivities continued unabated all climaxing in the golf course’s stunning clubhouse, where the Aloha Section PGA Foundation donated $5,000 of its $31,000 raised to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Hawaii. Open door policy at Kaanapali event.

    author: John Byrne | 27/01/2011 @ 9:29 am

“The vibe here is so different,” Dave Ward to told me this afternoon as we exited the media room at the Kaanapali Champions Skins Game at Kaanapali Golf Courses today. “They’re so full of aloha here.” he told me.

Dave lives in Kapalua, and is such a huge fan of golf, and the resort, that he actually . . . → Read More: Open door policy at Kaanapali event.

Kaanapali is truly where the world comes to play.

    author: John Byrne | @ 9:11 am

Have you ever entered a pro shop and found the vibe to be so wrought with arrogance that you were put off? I have heard many a player, and myself have experienced this too, where you go to a place to have fun and the gatekeepers are totally horses asses. Maui has a couple of places . . . → Read More: Kaanapali is truly where the world comes to play.

Da Game Show to cover Kaanapali Skins Game

    author: John Byrne | 18/01/2011 @ 4:31 pm

Strangely, PGA Tour communications manager Doug Milne never got back to me regarding our credential hold-ups at the SONY Open in Hawaii, even after I sent him two emails asking why we were never approved. Oahu resident and longtime event media host Bill Bachran has always graciously hosted us, but this year, we’ve had nothing but . . . → Read More: Da Game Show to cover Kaanapali Skins Game

    Storms brew in the Pacific

    author: John Byrne | 14/01/2011 @ 4:12 am

While I found myself in the midst of my own tempest during the Hyundai TOC, barely a day has passed after its conclusion before the islands got hit hard by heavy rains, and writers like Rex Hoggard wonder aloud in their blogs about whether the Tour opener should be bidding farewell to Hawaii! Say what?

Barry Helle at Blue says play is good this week

    author: John Byrne | 27/12/2010 @ 7:05 pm

I paid a visit to Marry Helle at Wailea Old Blue today and he said play has picked up this week. He had over 150 golfers on S. Maui’s first resort course yesterday, and expected about the same today.

The Dunes is also doing well, not only because of Kahili’s recent mudslides, but because we just have . . . → Read More: Barry Helle at Blue says play is good this week

Mudslides temporarily force closure of nine holes at Kahili

    author: John Byrne | 25/12/2010 @ 5:01 am

The stormy weather of late caused mudslides at Kahili and the course was temporarily forced to send golfers around the front nine twice. This pushed a lot of play over to the Dunes and elsewhere.

Dave Gleason was pleasantly surprised that his course, The Dunes, was getting some heavy play, but I know that’s not how he . . . → Read More: Mudslides temporarily force closure of nine holes at Kahili

Tourists arrive in droves on Xmas eve, but how many golfers?

    author: John Byrne | 24/12/2010 @ 11:31 pm

While most were baking cookies or enjoying a family dinner on Christmas eve, a mass of tourists arrived on Maui for the holidays. I was standing in Kahului airport: meeting and greeting them until the last (American Airlines) flight rolled in at around 10ish.

I had always heard that this time of the year was the busiest, . . . → Read More: Tourists arrive in droves on Xmas eve, but how many golfers?

West Maui full of life today.

    author: admin | 19/12/2010 @ 9:57 am

I was over on the west side of the island today to check out Kaanapali after I heard the resort was to be completely out of carts and buried today, according to their sales and marketing manager Melissa Ludiwg. She shooed me away and told me not to bother. Unfortunately, I had to go to Kapalua . . . → Read More: West Maui full of life today.
