Green Grass Gurus

Juan Gutierrez, Senior Superintendent,
Kapalua Golf Courses

“We are in the process of transitioning into using
TifEagle turf on our greens. This type of bermudagrass
has extremely fine and erect leaf blades, which
will make for excellent putting conditions—since putting
well is the true test of golf. The course fairways
were planted in the 1970s with the highly popular
Tifgreen 328.”

Brian Kaulupali, Course Superintendent,
The Dunes at Maui Lani

Currently, the course has Tifdwarf on its greens.
Even though this variety of turf has been compared to
many creeping bentgrasses, we are in the process of
converting over to Ultradwarf. Right now, we have Ultradwarf
on holes No. 4 and No. 16. Hopefully, by using
this smoother turf, the course will be able to minimize
the shock of putting on greens in Hawaii. We use
Tifway II on our fairways. This variety of bermudagrass
allows for a better ball lie on the fairways.

Russ Dooge, Golf Course Superintendent,
King Kamehameha Golf Club

We use Ultradwarf on our greens. This allows us to
mow to shorter heights while still maintaining great
turf densities, which will give the golfer greater ball roll
distances. The course uses Tifgreen 328 on its fairways.
This variety is great because it’s resistant to many diseases,
traffic and drought.
