MAUI COUNTRY CLUB
Designed by Art Bell, William McKewan, and Jim Kelley in 1927

HIGHLIGHTS

A hidden gem tucked away in an exclusive residential enclave between Kahului and paia on the North Shore is Maui’s first real golf course. Three Scots designed and built it in 1927 on some shoreline pasture land.
While it is right next to the ocean, there is a groove of tall Ironwood trees that protect it from the sea. Still, golfers will feel the marine effect with winds and misty sea air all around them on this nine hole treasure.

OVERVIEW

Scratch golfers tend to gobble this course up, but it wasn’t always this way: the Maui Country Club was the host course for the Hawaiian Territorial Open (the precursor to the SONY Open in Hawaii) three times! Of course, this was back in the early days and the design of the Maui Country Club fits the mold of the classic era, when metal club heads with graphite shafts and hit-tech golf balls weren’t even on the drawing board yet. Golfers today come armed with the latest and greatest in equipment and the course is easy pickings for the skilled player, but mortals will certainly find plenty of opportunity to be humbled here.

TEE-TO-GREEN

The course’s nine holes are turned into 18 when played from different sets of tees. Our slope rating and total yardage reflects this. The nine holes all run parallel to one another with the entire layout four holes wide and as many as three in length. They point the northeast, hugging the shoreline and as a result, usually play either into or down a usually helping or hurting crosswind. The course is the flattest on Maui with several greens perched up on small mounds. The fairways are wide on most holes but it can get tricky on some tee shots. Women golfers and shorter hitters will love this golf course as it has some great greens and favors a good ground game.

EDITOR’S NOTES

Non-members are welcome to play this golf course on Mondays, and the green fees for walking nine holes are only $40. For another $7 you can ride in style. The course is no pushover for the average golfer. Most will have their share of double-bogeys after their day is done. The small greens are tricky to hit and they chipping and pitching can also test your skills, especially when the putting surface is elevated or tiered, as it is one some holes.

The proximity of this golf corse to the best wind and kite surfing on earth makes it a superb choice for those who imbibe in dual sports. Snowbirds or locals who are only on-island partite can actually join this club for a song, with the cost of the green fees paying for themselves in a matter of days! Then you can play aall week long, use the facilities, which include a great locker room, clubhouse, and pro shop, plus a swimming pool and tennis courts! Think of the family….

CONCLUSIONS

If you want to play a nice layout that won’t kill your pride, make some nice friends in the process, and enjoy a swim club too, this might be the permanent or partite membership option for you.
This is a golf club first, but feels more like a family recreational/social club too, and it is just that. Try it on a Monday and roll your putts on some of Maui’s best greens in the process.
