MAUI NUI
Designed by Bill Newis in 1987.

HIGHLIGHTS BY DA DAME SHOW HOST DAVE WARD

Tired of resort course prices but still want a challenge? Put Maui Nui on your list. One of the best, reasonably priced, public courses on the island. But don’t think this course is a stroll in the park. Some of the tightest par 4s will test your skill and patience. If you can get through 5, 6 and 9 on the front without ‘Tin Cupping’ it, you
have a chance for a decent round. The back side provides much needed relief with 13 and 18 being very birdieable (a new word) par 5s. But look out for the 15th hole… you need to thread a tee ball between two lakes to have a decent second shot. I usually just duck-hook it into the 16th fairway and play it from there; somewhat unconventional but effective—at times!

OVERVIEW

Maui Nui Golf Club was designed by Canadian course architect Bill Newis. Most holes feature wide fairways, and a mixture of long and short par-4s. Recent design changes by its former owners simplified the designs on holes 1, 4, 7, 10, 17 & 18 making them much more forgiving for the snowbird. The 18th hole, a par-5, was redesigned to help second shots find the green.

TEE-TO-GREEN

Most drives call for either a fade or a draw, but straight hitters will fare best here especially on some of the tighter driving holes, like Nos 2, 5, 6, and 14. Maui Nui’s four par 3s face every cardinal point on the compass, and are all level. Its fairways are narrowish and hilly. The greens are average-sized and undulating.

EDITOR’S NOTES

Maui Nui is a value course within minutes to condo dwellers in Kihei. It features expensive condominiums around its back nine holes. The course is hilly and somewhat tight, although it was opened up by its previous owner who also resanded the bunkers.

FACILITIES AND AMENITIES

There is a lighted driving range, pro shop, restaurant, and practice putting green. Many local pros teach here. There is also a club maker’s shop owned by Keith Anderson called: South Maui Golf & Repair.

CONCLUSIONS

Maui Nui is in an area where a great number of people reside and stay when they are visiting. Consequently, it has a big market right on its doorstep.
We have always liked this golf course because it features some great golf holes. The staff are terrific and at night, you’ll even see owls flying around the range.
